Body of Work

This is a list of Bruce's wood work from the present back to the hobby days, showing the last known location of each piece.  In the beginning, each piece was signed with the initials BAE and a date.  Once the hobby became a business in 1975, each piece was signed with the SunDog logo, a rising sun and the initials, BAE, directly underneath. Below that would be the Roman Numeral.

That systen of signing lasted until about 1981, when the Roman Numeral system was replaced by Logo and year.  This signing system  continued until the end of the business in 1986.

After 20+ years of no woodworking, in late 2006, Bruce made a single Bible Box. The latter part of 2007 saw the creation of another Bible Box, a few Large Oval Jewelry Boxes and Wedge Jewelry Boxes.  In 2008, Bruce was fully back to making things that he loved.

Starting in 2007, as each piece was completed, it is marked with the logo, the year and a sequential number for that item, within the given year.

2015-17 Cabinet On Stand V Black Cherry  2017 St Paul, MN

Introducing the fifth in the series of my Cabinet on Stand designs.  The inspiration was an image that appeared in my mind a few months ago.  I wanted to float a small cabinet within tall curved legs.  I also wanted to incorporate a Shoji panel, which in this design became the rear panel of the small cabinet.   I have been fascinated by shoji screens for some time and now have a small bit of hands on with so called “rice paper”.

The cabinet is 42 inches tall, 27 inches wide and 13 inches deep.  It is finished with a waterborne lacquer finish, an environmentally friendly finish.

2015-7 Cabinet On Stand IV  Black Walnut  2019 Columbus, OH

This cabinet was inspired by another cabinet I made many years ago (shown below).  I created that cabinet for my young bride, Kathy, but it was sold soon after completion.  In those days these things happened.

  This is the 1976 cabinet.

COS IV is my “today” take on that old design. It provides four drawers carried on all-wood full extension drawer slides and two doors.  The doors are carried on wood hinges.  Behind the doors are adjustable shelves.  The cabinet has my usual graduated three panel back.

This cabinet is 30 inches wide by 13 inches deep by 30 inches tall.

I have embraced waterborne finishing methods, decreasing personal and environmental exposure to harmful chemicals and assuring you, my customer that your support of my work will not conflict with your commitment to reducing your environmental footprint.

Bible Box      Dec-2006      Manheim       PA

The circa 1670 Bible Box, featured here, is a reproduction of one found in the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, Connecticut. It has crude, bold carving of the circled acanthus with the repeat pattern gouged out above. It is hand crafted from heavy solid oak. Subject to Bruce’s personal interpretation of the original, this piece is endowed with hand fashioned dovetails at each corner, solid brass hinges, an inset brass keyhole escutcheon, and a lock. It is finished inside and out with Danish oil finish.

The inside dimensions of this Bible box are 16-1/4 inches x 10 1/4 inches x 6-3/4 inches deep. This box weighs twenty pounds!

These boxes were used in every colonial home, housing the family Bible, records, special documents, and even prized seeds. The originals are very rare today; they are for the most part owned by museums and collectors. These boxes are most decorative and are much sought after today.

Every now and then one of my creations re-appears from the past. In this case,  Sydney Leslie, collections manager at a craft nonprofit in Pittsburgh, PA called Contemporary Craft, informed me that this box has been put on display after living in storage for decades. The date is 9-18-24. He reports that the box has been well received.

Cherry Desk with Wall Cabinet- Cherry/Birdseye Maple 1981   Desk-Personal Collection, Wall Cabinet-Madison, WI

The picture is a composite image. I never took a picture when they were still together.

I made this piece for my wife and she enjoyed it until we sold the house. At the closing we discovered that, because the wall cabinet was attached to the wall, it had to remain with the house. Our realtor did not help by informing us of that fact beforehand. The buyer would not budge, either. The desk and its wall cabinet would remain, forever, seperated.

The buyer had the wall cabinet moved to her residence immediately after she took possession of the house. Ten years later I wrote to her requesting the return of the wall cabinet offering to pay for it. My letter received no response.

In early 2023 I received information that the woman (buyer) was conducive to letting us have the wall cabinet back. I contacted the woman and asked for a picture of the wall cabinet which she provided. However, there was no interest in letting the wall cabinet return to us.

The desk and wall cabinet are five feet wide. The desk top is made from birdseye maple as are the oval panels in the wall cabinet doors.

They were finished with Watco Oil. The cherry was left natural and aged to the wonderful color they are today.

LXXVIII  Sphere Box Red Oak 6 inch    Mar-81 Personal Collection         WI

Each draw is part of its own layer with thinner layers of wood between the draws. All grain is glued up in the same direction, The draws are cut before the layers are glued up. They are actually in place as the sphere is formed.

The shape was not created on a wood lathe. Instead it was formed with a special jig utilizing a router for the roughing. Intermediate shaping was achieved with a rasp. Final shaping was performed with a series of abrasives mounted on padded blocks.

The legs went through many iterations before Kathy came up with this design which looks very fragile and provides the nicest lift.

Only two of each size were ever made. After nearly causing great harm to myself the attempt to make more of these was discontinued. How ever, I have been thinking, lately, perhaps they could be made with less risk to me........... hmmmmm.

LXXVII  Sphere Box Red Oak 11 inch Mar-81 Personal Collection           WI

This design was born out of the desire to add jewelry box functionality to a sphere of wood.  This one is made from Red Oak and is 11 inches in diameter. Only two of each size was ever made.  After nearly causing great harm to me the attempt to make more of these was discontinued.  However, I have been thinking, lately, perhaps they could be made with less risk to me........... hmmmmm.

Original Oval Tambour Boxes   1978  In My Private Collection

This design stems from my work with tambours and the oval shape of Shaker Oval Boxes.  These boxes were explicitely made as a production item to be sold through galleries nation wide.  The originals were made of pecan and finished with Watco Oil.  Only 5 of each size were made.  Of special note, the steam bent pulls.  These pulls were not carried into the production boxes as they were difficult to make.

They were introduced at the 1979 ACE Spring Craft Show held in St Louis (the only time this show was held in St Louis).  The boxes did well at that show and kicked off a new adventure.

Desk Built-in Black Walnut          1978   Onslow, IA

The Iowa couple stopped by again after having enjoyed their table for a while.  This time they wanted to inquire about a built-in desk for the wife.  The desk is around ten feet long complete with upper cabinets.  It was made with Black Walnut.  The design incorporated all the functionality she required.  Some of the upper cabinet doors contained authentic seeded glass which really looked nice on the finished unit.  Kathy and a very young Ben did the final field measurements for this desk as I was just swamped with work.  She also verified the desired features.  The desk was delivered and installed unfinished.  However, no pictures were ever taken.  This inspired a visit in 2009 to get the pictures.  We were sad to learn that one of the couple had passed on just a few years before this visit.  I want to thank the family for allowing us to come and photograph those pieces that I missed all those years ago.  Some 33 years later, the desk looks just beautiful with its aged patina.

Breakfront China Cabinet Black Walnut Aug-1978 Mt Horeb, WI

This cabinet was custom designed for a very special woman.  It is made entirely of black walnut and finished with clear rubbing varnish.  The diamond shaped glass, in the doors, is seedy antique glass.  The dimensions are 65 inches wide, 80 inches tall, and 18 inches deep.  I was surprised to discover that a picture was not taken of this piece when it was completed.  That task was accomplished in July of 2008.

XXVIII    Foundwood Table-spalted maple    1977    Greendale    WI

When I was out buying lumber I would find small piles of boards that had been passed by for better stock.  I would take these to make my Foundwood Series tables.  This particular table I have not parted with all these years.

XXIV    Secretary/Bookcase 2 of 3    1977    Middleton    WI

This system was made for a Middleton professional. The design was influenced by the drop front secretary of the 1700's.

The center unit was made first. The left and right units followed a year later. They were made from solid oak with a very dark stain followed with a varnish finish.

These units were designed to conceal modern 70's office machines like photo copier and typewriter and look very traditional when closed up.

1876 Chair Reproduction    1977    Madison    WI

A man brought in one of these chairs.  He wanted six more made.  I made eight so we would have two for our use.  They are in perfect condition to this day.

Trestle Dining Table - Red Oak 10 feet long    1977    Onslow    IA

A couple from Iowa stopped in one day, early in 1977. They had been referred by a local business. Their hope was that I could make the table they wanted for their kitchen. They also had a smaller table that had a crack in the top. "Could I fix that?" they asked.

The smaller table was repaired. Following that I made the Trestle Table and Bench, pictured here, for their kitchen.

It was made from thick Red Oak and spanned ten feet in length. The table and bench seat were delivered unfinished as the new owners wanted to finish it. The picture was taken shortly after they completed the finishing in 1977.

The table and bench looked great during a visit in 2009, some 33 years after it was made.

XXIII    Secretary-walnut    1977    Greendale    WI

I made this for my bride.  It is inspired by a Pensylvania German Secretary that I saw in a book of measured drawings.  I changed the height and depth of the cabinet to better fit modern uses.  It also features a rare example of my carving.

XVI    Oval Pedestal Dining Table-walnut    1977    Blue Mounds    WI

This table was made for the woman that provided day care for our young children during the hectic early business days. Kathy and I had the privilege of seeing it again while on a visit to the Mount Horeb area during July, 2008.

XV    Rolltop Desk - cherry    1977    Middleton    WI

I made this desk for a dentist who ordered it after seeing my work at an art fair.  It borrows from the design of the mid nineteenth century S-curve rolltop desks.

Update - 2014-03-05, Just heard from the dentist that he still uses the desk every day.

Mirror - walnut    1977    Mt Horeb    WI

I had an unusually rough  piece of Black Walnut that had many defects.    After chalking around the defects this form appeared.  Since form must have function, it became a mirror.

I    Trestle Desk-Walnut    Mar-1976    Waunakee    WI

This type of desk provided workspace with a smaller footprint than a regular desk. The traditional pigeon hole design was employed along with a few small drawers.

This particular desk was custom built for a Waunakee, WI couple who loved early American design utilizing mortise and tenon joinery and dovetailed drawers. The wood is Black Walnut and the finish is oil varnish. It is the first item ever to receive a Roman Numeral along with my logo.

Shaker Oval Boxes    1976    Waunakee    WI

I read a book about Shaker Furniture Design and was fascinated by these boxes. I researched the topic and gathered information about how these were originally made. They are made from very thin wood that is heated with steam or very hot water and then placed around oval forms until the wood is dry.

Easy Chair - Walnut    May-1975    Dalton    WI

This chair was commissioned by CF Knight of Dalton, WI. It was custom fit to his liking being especially sure that the seat depth didn't put pressure on the back of his legs. Kathy made the cushions. He provided the thick walnut it was made of.

Charlie sawed and air dried hardwood lumber harvested in Green Lake County. He also ran a hardware store and seed cleaning operation. I can no longer recall just how I came to know Charlie but I am very glad that I did. He was a man of many interests and was especially proud of his wildflower photographs. His wife, Alice, was equally interesting and we became good friends with them.

I would like to think Charlie enjoyed his chair right up to his passing in 1991.

Trestle Desk & Chair    May-1975    Waunakee    WI

This type of desk provided workspace with a smaller footprint than a regular desk. The traditional pigeon hole design was employed along with a few small drawers.

This particular desk was my first of this design. It was made for my wife during the time she was preparing to become a mom for our first son. Both pieces were made of Soft Maple and finished with oil varnish.

Crib-Cherry    1975    Greendale  WI

This crib was made for our first child in 1975.  Our second child also made use of it.  The crib then circulated around the extended family for a few years.

In 2009 the crib was disassembled and upgraded to current safety regulations for our first grandchild.  After she graduated to a regular bed the crib was placed into storage for its next summon to duty.

Chest of Draws - Cherry    Jun-1975    Madison  WI

This chest of draws was made for our first son from black cherry. This was my first larger piece built in the 1/2 garage workshop I had at the time. The shop was heated with propane as needed and had to allow our vehicle in at night. I managed to complete it just two months before his birth. The next year the Pensylvania German inspired flowers were painted on the draw fronts.

The chest had a one piece back that would shrink each winter and cause the draws to bind. I hadn't learned about wood movement and how to deal with it. The back finally developed a crack which stopped the binding problem but looked just awful.

In late 2008 I re-made the back retaining the original back as part of a panel-in-frame assembly that allows the panels to move within a frame. Especially important was to keep the original signing and dating portion of the old back. The flowers were also removed from the draw fronts as no one ever liked them.

Aside from the color difference of the new wood and newly exposed wood the chest looks great. The color differences will even out as the new wood catches up to the aged wood. All new work was finished with a waterborne acrylic finish.

Coffee Table - Walnut      Jan-1973, Greendale, WI

This table was made in the basement workshop of the apartment we rented as our first home. That was on 48th street just west of Washington Park in Milwaukee.

I had only hand tools to fashion this table from 12/4 (3 inch thick) walnut acquired from Charlie Knight in Green Lake County, WI. I used thick wood so it could be easily re-used at a future time. The legs were attached with mortise and tenon joinery. The top was joined with splines and made flat with hand planes and scrapers. It was made round by drilling a series of holes around the future diameter and removing the remainder with a chisel.

In 2008 my loving wife asked if the old table could be used to fashion her new design. The old tabletop was split to form two new surfaces. New legs were added and we have an exciting new piece of furniture. Of course, finished with a waterborne acrylic.

Walnut Headboard & Night Stands  Jun-1972, Greendale, WI

I made this furniture for our very first home. It was designed and built as we planned our wedding. The headboard was made from 2 inch thick Black Walnut which came from Charlie Knight in Green Lake County, WI. The night stands were made from 1 inch walnut lumber. All of this lumber was air dried.

The project was carried out in a borrowed basement workshop in the building I lived in at the time. I had the use of a small tablesaw and some hand tools.

Our wedding date was immediately carved into the back of the headboard. As time passed two additional carvings were performed for the births of our children.
